During my visit in United States, i had chance to meet wonderful people. We talked about this culture while enjoying our cigars almost everyday. In the cigar stores there are wide range of choices and brands with different blends but there is a particular brand i was curious to know more about, “Arturo Fuente”. Cigars are always more than a tabacco blend but a passionate culture and a spirit. I was sure there was something more behind the Fuente cigars that i didn’t know.

James Orr, a good friend, a cigar enthusiast and the director of many favorite movies back in 90s, told me the story of Fuente family and the passion behind their amazing cigars. After all the stories i heard, Fuente cigars never tasted and look the same to me. I would like to share with you with the respect in Mr. Arturo Fuente and his heritage.

The story starts with a young passionate man who immigrated from Cuba to United States in 1902. His name is Arturo Fuente. At the age 24 in 1912 he established his Cuban hand rolled cigar factory under the name A. Fuente & Co. in West Tampa, Florida. After 12 years of growth, in 1924 A. Fuente factory burned down. He had no chance to re-establish the cigar factory for 22 years. But this is not going to be the first time the family had to start the business from scratch… I hope you enjoy the documentary.

The Fuente Family: An American Dream

James Orr wrote and directed two passion-project documentaries in 2002: “The Fuente Family: An American Dream”, and “Fuente Fuente Opus X: The Making of A Legend”. The two cameramen on that project were Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (directors of Crank and Crank: High Voltage), who Orr hired shortly after they graduated from film school. “The Fuente Family: An American Dream” was nominated as Best Documentary Feature of 2004 by the International Press Academy. It had English narration by Joe Mantegna, Spanish narration by Andy Garcia, and a music score by Arturo Sandoval.
